Alcoa Laboratories presentation letter for the 1988 Hartwig MMC chess set
Front of the original Alcoa Laboratories enclosure mailed with the limited 1988 presentation chess set. The letter states that the pieces follow Josef Hartwig’s 1923 Bauhaus geometry (cube, cylinder, sphere encoding movement), that the men are sintered from ultrafine alumina-based powders, that the board is aluminum-lithium alloy 2090 sheet clad with nearly pure aluminum, and that the frame is a clear polymer. It also notes the signature-bearing aluminum sheet used for beverage-can ends. Portrait caption identifies Bridenbaugh as Vice President, Research & Development, Alcoa Laboratories.
