Antique Cantonese Burmese Disc Chess Set

Lot #335. Antique Hybrid Staunton Chessmen

Antique Hybrid Staunton Chessmen.

Offered here is a set of Antique Hybrid Staunton Chessmen. These vintage chessmen are a mixture of natural and red-stained pieces. The King stands 3-1/2″ tall with a 1-1/2″ diameter base. Each of the chess pieces have green baize base pads. There are two shades of green, a sure indication that the set is a hybrid – not to mention that the chessmen are a mixture. The difference in the shade of the red stain and the two slightly different white Pawn sizes  confirm that the pieces are from two separate sets. The chessmen appear to be of German and English origin. The Knights and Bishops, with their shallow cut miters, are styled much like pieces found in sets produced during the 1870s.

Except for the chip to the White Queen’s base and the missing Red Bishop’s finial, the chessmen are generally in excellent condition. The chessmen were produced around 1890. The chessmen play best on a chessboard with 2″ or 2-1/4″ squares. The antique Junghans chess timer and the antique chessboard shown in the images are not included in this offering, but may be purchased elsewhere on this site.
