Antique Tournament Chessboard.

This offering features an Antique Tournament Chessboard. The chess board squares are Sycamore and Rosewood veneer with a wood veneer back and a thin Mahogany frame. The chessboard measures 18″ square. The square size is 2-1/8″. The condition and finish of the chessboard is good for its age. It could use a coat of a quality paste wax like Lebron’s or MinWax. The chess board appears to have been produced in the United Kingdom in the late 1800s. The chessboard is designed to accommodate chessmen with a base diameter of between 1-1/2″ and 1-5/8″.

This English-made framed playing field style chessboard was in common use until World War II. After the War, much more economical wooden chess boards started appearing from other European countries such as Spain, Poland and Germany.
