Antique Two Sided Chessboard

Lot #255. Antique Two Sided Chessboard

Antique Two Sided Chessboard.

This offering features an Antique Two Sided Chessboard. The chess board squares are solid Sycamore and Rosewood with a narrow Mahogany frame. The chessboard measures 17-5/8″ square. The square size is 2-0″. The condition of the chessboard is sound, but the finish needs attention. It could use a coat of a quality paste wax like Lebron’s or MinWax. The chess board appears to have been produced in the United Kingdom between 1890 and 1925. The chessboard is designed to accommodate chessmen with a base diameter of between 1-1/2″ and 1-5/8″.

This English-made small-framed style chessboard was in common use from around 1900 until World War II. After the War, much more economical wooden chess boards started appearing from other European countries such as Spain, Poland and Germany. Chessboards bearing the Jaques of London and British Chess Company stamping were all most likely produced by the same factory in the UK.
