Lot #659. Large Antique Folding Cardboard Chessboard
Large Antique Folding Cardboard Chessboard.
An unusually large Antique Folding Cardboard Chessboard. The construction is mottled gold paper back and gold-trimmed squares over cardboard. The chessboard measures 22-0″ square. The individual squares are 2-1/2″, Red and off-White, outlined in gold. This large antique chessboard is in serviceable condition with some cracking starting in the seam as shown in the attached images, although seam is still in tact. The covering is sound and the chessboard lies flat. Based on the back design and the gold-outlined red and white squares, the chessboard was produced in The United Kingdom around 1850. The chessboard is designed to accommodate full club-size Staunton chess pieces with base diameters up to 2″, and the largest pre-Staunton chessmen such as the Saint George, Philidor, French Régence, Directoire, Calvert, Lund and Northern Upright designs, as well as the older Indian Vizagapatam, Macao Burmese and Cantonese chessmen.
