The Type 1 Bone Staunton chessmen were produced in several sizes. Both Richard Whitty B & Company produced similar sets starting around 1880 or a bit earlier, but the maker of this set is not known. The Knights are styled much like Knights found on late Georgian and Early Victorian chess sets. There is no way to determine whether is box is original to the set. The chessmen are in excellent condition for their age and the red stain is still vibrant.
Very little is known about all the makers who offered these style bone chessmen. These Type 1 Staunton chessmen are seen at auction from time-to-time, but it would appear that their production ended by the late 1890s.
