Description
Antique English Tournament Chessboard, Rosewood & Sycamore. Circa 1890.
Offered here is an antique English Tournament chessboard with 2-1/4″ squares of Rosewood and Sycamore and a solid Mahogany frame. The chessboard measures 20″ square. The playing field is recessed in the traditional English picture-frame manner, with a reinforced paneled Mahogany back.
The board was produced in England around 1890. It is in excellent condition for its age, with a sound finish and only minor battle scars consistent with age and long use. These can be seen in the last two gallery images.
This chessboard is designed to accommodate tournament-size Staunton chessmen with base diameters of about 1-1/2″ to 1-7/8″, including Small Club and many Full Club sets. It will also display a wide range of large-Victorian English playing sets and many figural chess pieces.
These framed English boards were in common use from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s and are the same general type associated with Jaques of London and the British Chess Company. After the Second World War, far more economical wooden boards began to appear from Spain, Poland, and Germany
