Description

Late Victorian Lasker Style Chessmen.

A set of Club Size Late Victorian Lasker Style Staunton Chessmen. These vintage chessmen are Boxwood and Ebony, and unweighted. All the chessmen still have their original green baize base pads. This is a full tournament-size chess set. The King stands 3-7/8″ tall with a 1-5/8″ diameter base, which is referred to as the Small Club Size. The Knights are very well carved Jaques Lasker Style and could well have been carved by a Jaques craftsman, particularly if Jaques’ Knight heads were outsourced. These Staunton chessmen were likely produced in the United Kingdom around 1885. The manufacturer is unknown, but the quality is every bit as good as comparable Jaques chessmen.

The chessmen are housed in their original lined Mahogany slide-top box. The pieces are in excellent condition and have developed a very pleasing honey patina.  There are no replacements.  The chessmen play and display best on a chessboard with 2-1/4″ to 2-3/8″ squares. The chessboard shown is not included as part of this sale. A good selection of antique and vintage to pair with these chessmen can be found here
