Description
Antique Library-Size Chessboard.
Offered here is a Antique Library-Size Chessboard. The squares are Maple and Mahogany veneer with a solid Mahogany frame and wood veneer back. The chess board measures 16-1/4″ square with a 1-1/8″ thick frame and a square size of 1-7/8″. These chessboards are very similar to those offered by Jaques and British Chess Company during the Victorian Period and were normally used in old English libraries and homes. This antique chess board is in good condition. The finish is generally sound. The chessboard appears to have been produced around 1860. A fine collection of new and antique chessboards can be found here. Chess pieces are not included, but an authentic set of antique Jaques and other chessmen can be found here. Chessboards of this size were made to accommodate Library-size Staunton chess pieces with 2-3/4″ to 3-1/4″ Kings. For a short history of the John Jaques Company and the Staunton Chessmen, click here.
