Description
Antique Rosewood and Holly Chessboard Reproduction, Solid Mahogany Framed.
This offering features a reproduction of an Antique Rosewood and Holly Chessboard. The chess board squares are recessed Holly and Rosewood with a Mahogany back and a solid Mahogany frame. The chessboard measures 23″ square. The square size is 2-1/2″. These chessboards were produced to accompany Jaques and other Club-size Antique and modern Staunton chess pieces. The board also serves as a fine complement to our wide range of our reproduction chessmen, which are offered elsewhere on this site. These chessboards are an exact reproduction of the chessboards produced from the mid 1800s through early 1900s. The chessboard was designed by Frank Camaratta. This chessboard will accommodate Staunton chessmen with a base diameter of between 1-7/8″ and 2-0″.
These framed English-made chessboards were in common use until World War II. After the War, much more economical wooden chess boards started appearing from other European countries such as Spain, Poland and Germany. Antique Chessboards bearing the Jaques of London and British Chess Company stamping were all most likely produced by the same factory in the UK.
