B and Company Chessmen Reproduction.
Offered here is set of full Club-Size reproduction B & Company Chessmen. The pieces are crafted from Boxwood and Ebony, heavily weighted, and rest atop green baize base pads. The King stands 4-3/8″ tall with a 1-7/8″ diameter base. This set of chessmen includes an extra pair of Queens to assist during Pawn Promotion, a feature pioneered by Frank Camaratta in 1995. These sets were produced in several sizes by B & Company around 1860 or a bit earlier. The chessmen are housed in a House of Staunton lined and divided hinge-top Mahogany box. The chessmen are new. They play and display best on a chessboard with 2-1/2″ squares. The chessboard shown is not included, but a suitable new or antique chessboard can be found elsewhere on our site.
Very little is known about B & Company. My research has turned up empty, as has that of fellow collector Jon Crumiller. These chess sets are seen at auction from time-to-time, but it would appear that production ended by the late 1860s. There is nothing in the literature about the company, nor is there any evidence that they manufactured other chess products.
