Description
Vintage Mahogany & Curly Maple Library Size Chessboard
Offered here is a vintage Mahogany and Curly Maple Library Size chessboard. The playing field features 1-3/4″ squares of Mahogany and figured Curly Maple within a solid Mahogany frame. The board measures 15″ square overall.
This wooden chessboard was probably produced around 1970. It has a green felt back and is in excellent condition, with a clean finish and no significant wear.
The board is designed for Library Size Staunton chessmen with a 3″ King, most non-Staunton playing sets, and smaller figural sets such as those Toriart sets produced by Anri of Italy.
Curly Maple is not a distinct species, but a figure occasionally found in sugar maple. The wavy grain creates a three-dimensional, chatoyant effect often called flame, fiddleback, or tiger maple. Furniture makers have long prized it for that movement in the wood, and it pairs especially well with the warmer tones of Mahogany on a chessboard.
