Dieppe Inspired Early 19th Century German Bust Chessmen.
Here is set of Dieppe Inspired German Bust Chessmen, early 19th century. The King stands 4″ tall with a 1.4″ diameter base. The Rooks are full tower edifices. The set is definitely a German vs. French in theme. The Napoleonic Grenadier uniform dates from 1815 or so. The features of the pieces different from the more traditional Dieppe sets. For instance, not only are the bishops not the typical Jester (Fou) style but note the cross finials. You don’t see a cross finial on Dieppe pattern Bishops. A search of several Dieppe Set databases revealed not a single Bishop’s cross finial.
