Dolfi Farmer’s Bust Chess Set.
Offered here is a set of Dolfi Medieval Characters Chessmen, often referred to as the Farmer’s Bust Set. The bust-style figure subjects are sculptures representing various caricatures. The King stands 3-1/4″ tall with a 1-1/8″ base. There are eight different Pawn faces in each army. The pieces represent a medieval theme with peasants and farmers as pawns.
Dolfi is a very old Italian wood carving house. They are based in Val Gardena, in Tyrol in northern Italy.
The Dolfi Framer’s Bust chessmen are produced in Italy using a unique method to manufacture affordable chess sets. The chessmen are a cast composite material called “Sculptite, which is a slurry of sawdust and resin. Each of the castings are mounted atop turned lightly weighted Alpine Maple pedestals with felt base pads. The chess pieces are in excellent condition. The Spanish chessboard shown is not included with this sale, but a suitable chessboard and storage box is included. Several other chessboards can be found here. These chessmen were likely produced around 1965, although an exact date can’t be verified.
