Dolfi Renaissance Characters Chess Set.
Offered here is a Dolfi Renaissance Characters chess set, often referred to as the Farmers Chess Set. The full-figure subjects are sculptures representing various Renaissance caricatures. The King stands 3-3/4″ tall with a 1-1/4″ base. There are two different Pawn faces in each army. The pieces are produced in Italy using a unique method to manufacture affordable chess sets. The chessmen are a cast composite material called “Sculptite, which is a slurry of sawdust and resin. Each of the castings are mounted atop turned lightly weighted Alpine Maple pedestals with felt base pads. The chess pieces are in excellent condition. The wooden chessboard shown measures 13-1/2″ square with 1-1/2″ squares. The chessboard is included with this sale. Other suitable chessboards can be found here. These chessmen were likely produced around 1965, although an exact date can’t be verified.
