Offered here is an original The Franklin Mint Raj Chess Set, formally the “Sepoy Rebellion” chess set. The Franklin Mint Raj Chess Set is a highly detailed, collectible chess set depicting the British and Indian conflict during the 1857 Sepoy Rebellion. The chess pieces are crafted in hand-painted pewter and a cast marble playing surface, originally released in 1987 as a limited-edition masterpiece. There are two variations, this tabletop version and a full-sized table mounted version.
The chess set contains 32 Pewter portrait sculptures mounted atop light and dark-stained wooden pedestals. The pieces range in height from 2.5 inches to 3.75 inches for the kings. The chessboard itself is crafted from mahogany with an inlaid cast marble chessboard designed to resemble the intricate tile work of the Taj Mahal. The ornately carved playing area has a dark hardwood encasement. The chess board has two removable drawers which open to reveal separate storage compartments for each of the thirty-two chess pieces. Each drawer is lined in red felt. The Storage chest Measures 20″ over all with 1-1/2″ squares.
Historical Background.
The Raj Chess Set vividly captures the historical clash between the British forces (“The Queen’s Forces) and the Indian rebels (“The Forces of The Rebellion”) during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The 32 pewter sculptures are exceptionally detailed and hand-painted in authentic historical colors. Each of the chessmen is mounted on solid wooden pedestal with circular gold base discs.
Originally available by subscription only from Franklin Mint in 1987, the set was a limited edition with a release price around $2,500. It was intended both as a functional chess set and a collectible art piece that blends history with fine craftsmanship. It has long been discontinued and is considered a rare and valuable collector’s item today
