Produced in Europe during the late 20th century, this dramatic figural set transforms the chessboard into a stage for the radical phase of the French Revolution (1793–1794), when the guillotine became the ultimate symbol of revolutionary justice — and terror.
The rooks are meticulously detailed guillotines, complete with blade slot, frame, and rope details — a powerful and macabre design choice that makes every capture feel historically charged. The knights are rearing horses full of motion and energy. The kings depict Maximilien Robespierre, the architect of the Terror. The chess Queen is often portrayed as Marie Antoinette, a symbolic “queen” even though she was dead during most of the Terror. During the French Revolution — including the Reign of Terror (1793–1794) — France was not a monarchy, and Maximilien Robespierre was not a king. He was a leading revolutionary statesman and a member of the Committee of Public Safety.
Standing at 3-3/8 inches (85–86 mm) for the king, this is a practical size set for casual play and a display. Some History.
Brief Background.
The Reign of Terror (September 1793 – July 1794) was the most radical and violent phase of the French Revolution. Facing foreign invasion and internal rebellion, the revolutionary government, led by Maximilien Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety, adopted extreme measures to defend the Republic. Suspected enemies of the Revolution — aristocrats, moderates, clergy, and even fellow radicals — were arrested and tried by revolutionary tribunals.
The guillotine, originally designed as a more humane method of execution, became the chilling symbol of this period. In Paris alone, thousands were beheaded in public squares, most famously at the Place de la Révolution (today’s Place de la Concorde). Across France, the death toll reached into the tens of thousands when summary executions and deaths in prison are included.
The Terror consumed its own creators. By mid-1794, fear and paranoia had turned the Revolution against itself. On 27–28 July 1794, Robespierre and his closest allies were overthrown and guillotined the following day, bringing the most extreme phase of the Revolution to a sudden end.
