Vintage German Nutcracker Chess Set.
A very nice example of a vintage German Nutcracker themed Chess Set. The king stands 4-1/4″ tall with a 1-1/4″ base. This custom Nutcracker chess set design consists of 32 hand-turned, hand-appointed chess pieces. The bodies of the chessmen are solid Maple and Walnut. The pawns sport pipes and are quite charming. The chessmen are in excellent condition, as is the combination chessboard and storage box. The Chessboard/storage box is likely not original to the set. Often referred to as “Toy Sets”, there are a number of related designs, and prices can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. This sets appears to date to the early 20th century.
