Description
Jaques Mahogany Framed Chessboard, Walnut and Sycamore.
This offering features a New and unopened Jaques Mahogany Framed Chessboard. The sunken playing field features 2-1/8″ squares of Walnut and Sycamore with a solid Mahogany Frame and Veneer back. The 20″ Square chessboard is new and housed in its original unopened box. This chessboard was produced to accompany standard size Jaques and other Antique Tournament-size Staunton chess pieces. The chess board also serves as a fine complement to our wide range of our extensive line of antique and reproduction chessmen, which are offered elsewhere on this site. These chessboards are an exact reproduction of the chessboards produced from the mid 1800s through early 1900s. These chessboards are no longer sold by Jaques on London. The chessboard will accommodate chessmen with a base diameter of between 1-5/8″ and 1-3/4″.
These framed English-made chessboards were in common use until World War II. After the War, much more economical wooden chess boards started appearing from other European countries such as Spain, Poland and Germany. Antique Chessboards bearing the Jaques of London and British Chess Company stamping were all most likely produced by the same factory in the UK.
