Description

Romans vs Barbarians Pewter Chessmen

Signature

Offered here is a rare, handcrafted Romans vs Barbarians chessmen by renowned British sculptor Ken Kearsley, England. Every one of the 32 pieces is individually cast in solid pewter (white metal (pewter alloy), fully hand-painted, felt-based, and personally signed on the base “KEN KEARSLEY ENGLAND, along with the rank of each of the chessmen. The King stands 3.8″ (97 mm) tall – a perfect display size. One side depicts disciplined Imperial Roman legionaries in striking red & gold with crested helmets and eagle shields; the opposing army shows fierce barbarian tribes in deep green with horned helmets, fur cloaks and Celtic-patterned shields. Exceptional detail and vivid coloring make this a true collector’s piece. Produced in very limited numbers during the 1980s–1990s, signed Kearsley chess sets rarely appear on the market. These Romans vs Barbarians Pewter chessmen are in excellent vintage condition consistent with age, no damage, original paint crisp with a few minor chips. Ideal for historical chess collectors, ancient Rome enthusiasts, wargamers, or as a standout display in home or office. No chessboard is included with this sale, but a suitable board can be found here. We ship World-wide and fully insured.

As previously noted, the theme captures the late Roman Empire and Barbarian Invasions (c. 300–600 AD), focusing on conflicts between Roman forces and invading tribes (e.g., Goths, Huns). Kearsley’s sculpting style blends archaeological accuracy with dramatic flair, influenced by his expertise in historical miniatures—common in British collector circles during the post-WWII era.
