About these Lladró King Richard chessmen
These elegant Medieval porcelain chessmen represent King Richard’s Court. Although made in the twentieth century, the designs echo Europe’s Mannerist period (c. 1520–1600)—the elongated, expressive figures familiar from Spanish Mannerist painting (including El Greco) that also inform many Lladró figurines.
Richard I stood about 6′5″ and was King of England from 1189 until his death on 6 April 1199 at Châlus, France. He also held titles including Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, and Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes, and was at times overlord of Brittany.
Recommended chessboard size
Use a board with squares no smaller than 2¾ inches; about 3 inches is ideal. Gallery photos show the set on a board with 3⅛-inch Amboyna and Birdseye Maple squares. The chessboard shown is not included. Browse our selection of new and antique chessboards separately.
About Lladró
Lladró is a Spanish art-porcelain brand founded by brothers Juan, José, and Vicente Lladró. From early ceramic work in Almàssera in 1953—inspired by Meissen, Sèvres, and Capodimonte—to their Valencia store and a single factory on Spain’s southeastern coast, Lladró is known worldwide for finely modeled porcelain figurines and luxury decorative objects.
