Offered here is a beautiful, like-new handcrafted Mexican Tarascan wooden chess set. The King stands 5-1/2″ tall with a 1-5/8″ diameter base. This complete 32-piece set features glossy jet-black and Natural lacquered pieces. Turned and carved by Tarascan artisans in Paracho, Michoacán, each piece displays the classic multi-tiered bases with multiple decorative rings, turned grooves, and lattice carvings, all hallmark of traditional Tarascan chess sets.
All 32 chessmen rest atop protective felt base pads. Completing the set is a folding wooden chessboard with alternating light and dark squares, hand-carved floral and scrollwork borders, and standard A-H / 1-8 chess notation. For storage, the folding chessboard doubles as a storage box lined with burgundy purple velvet. The chess set is in excellent like-new condition. and a fine example of traditional Mexican Tarascan folk-art chess craftsmanship.
