Vintage Napoleon vs Wellington Whimsical Ceramic Chessmen
Offered here is a set of vintage Napoleon vs Wellington Whimsical Ceramic Chessmen. This polychrome chess set features a 5″ king, the pieces are felted and heavily weighted.
Step into a playful battlefield of history with this enchanting ceramic chess set, whimsically depicting the epic rivalry between Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington. Crafted from a hand-molded ceramic with glossy multi-color appointments, each of the 32 pieces boasts exaggerated, caricature-style designs that evoke mischievous gnomes—thick bulbous noses, bushy beards, curly wigs, and comically stout bodies.
The French side shines in blue and beige tones, featuring a 5-inch-tall King as a bicorne-hatted Napoleon, a curly-haired Queen, bearded bishops in military garb, stylized horse-head knights, crenellated tower rooks, and pint-sized pawn soldiers. Opposing them, the British side in earthy browns and blacks mirrors the theme with its own gnome-like Wellington King, dark-haired Queen, and matching pieces.
Believed to originate from a Danish potter in the mid to late 20th century (1980s), this folk art-inspired set captures the satire of the Napoleonic Wars, particularly the Battle of Waterloo, in a delightfully humorous way. Perfect for collectors of the whimsical, it adds a touch of quirky charm to any game room, bookshelf, or curio cabinet. In excellent vintage condition, this rare find is a certain conversation starter. No chessboard is not included, but a suitable board can be found here.
