Offered here is a set of heirloom quality Rosenthal Figural Ceramic Chessmen crafted from unglazed black and white porcelain, giving it an elegant, modern look. The king stands 5-0″ tall with a 1-1/2″ diameter base. This is a limited-edition porcelain chess set created by Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad for the German luxury porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal. The Wiinblad set is rarer in the marketplace than standard Rosenthal porcelain set and appears less frequently at auction than the Morandini geometric set.

The chess pieces are as new and housed in their original cardboard display box shown. No chessboard is included.

The Rosenthal Chess Set refers primarily to designer chess sets produced by Rosenthal, a renowned German porcelain manufacturer. Notably, in 2003, Rosenthal collaborated with designers such as Marcello Morandini and Bjørn Wiinblad to release limited edition sets that combine art, geometry, and luxury porcelain craftsmanship.
This chess set is one of a limited edition of 99 sets and was created around 2003-2004 to commemorate Rosenthal’s 125th anniversary, with the design serving as a tribute to Philip Rosenthal, who transformed the company into a design powerhouse. The figural pieces feature Wiinblad’s signature anthropomorphic style with distinctive faces and decorative details on each chess piece. Wiinblad had a legendary five-decade collaboration with Rosenthal. Bjørn Wiinblad contributed whimsical, imaginative designs inspired by music and theater, featured prominently in Rosenthal’s Studio Line over several decades.
