History:
The Tridimensional Chess set first appeared in the original 1964 Star Trek TV series in the second episode of the Original Series, Charlie X. The original Star Trek 3-D Chess Set had a very limited production run. The NEXT GENERATION Tridimensional Chess Set had an even more limited run and is quite rare.
The Star Trek: THE NEXT GENERATION (TNG) Tridimensional Chess Set was released from The Franklin Mint in 1995. It is modeled on the 3-D chess set used in the Forward lounge aboard the USS Enterprise as seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Like its Original Series-based counterpart, the TNG set is modeled in half-scale. The precision cast metal pieces are plated in 24-karat gold or sterling silver. The playing field constructed of acrylic supported by a 24K plated gold frame. The chessboard and attack boards are black and clear. The boards on the original set were blue-and-clear. The board’s base of the supporting frame is square. The chess pieces are more contemporary in design than the original TOS pieces.
