Description

Tournament Size Antique Bone Staunton Chessmen

Offered here is a set of Type 2 Antique Bone Staunton Chessmen. These vintage chessmen are fabricated from mutton bone, natural and red-stained. The King stands 3.4″ tall with a 1.4″ diameter base. These Bone Staunton Chessmen are in excellent condition with a restoration to one of the White Rook crenellations. The chessmen play and display best on a chessboard with 2-1/8″ or 2-1/4″ squares. A chessboard is not included, but for our extensive selection of new and antique chessboards and chess timers, check here

Bone Staunton chessmen were produced in several sizes. Both Richard Whitty and B & Company produced similar sets starting around 1880 or a bit earlier, but the maker of this set is not known.  The Knights are styled much like Knights found in the better Staunton chess sets. The chessmen are in excellent condition and the red stain is still vibrant. Very little is known about all the makers who offered these style bone chessmen. From around 1890 forward, other smaller bone Staunton chessmen were being offered through a German manufacturer, but they lacked the fine detail found in these earlier sets.
