Antique Bone Staunton Chessmen, Type 2.
Offered here is a set of Type 2 Antique Bone Staunton Chessmen. These vintage chessmen are natural and red-stained bone. The King stands 3.6″ tall with a 1.5″ diameter base. These Bone Staunton Chessmen are in Very Good – to – Excellent condition. The chessmen play best on a chessboard with 2-1/8″ or 2-1/4″ squares. The antique carton-pierre chessboard shown in the images are not included in this offering, but may be purchased elsewhere on this site. for our extensive selection of new and antique chessboards, check here.
The Type 2 Antique Bone Staunton chessmen were produced in several sizes. A number of manufacturers produced similar sets starting around 1870 or a bit earlier, but the maker of this set is not known. The Knights are styled much like Knights found on the Type 1 chess sets, but their carving is somewhat cruder. The chessmen are in very Good-to-Excellent excellent condition for their age and the red stain is still serviceable.
Very little is known about all the makers who offered these style bone chessmen. Type 2 Staunton chessmen are seen at auction from time-to-time, but it would appear that their production ended by the late 1890s.
