Victorian Folding Chess Backgammon Board Box

Lot #584. Victorian Folding Chess Backgammon Board Box

Victorian Folding Chess Backgammon Board Box.

A Victorian Folding Chess Backgammon Board Box with inlaid Backgammon points on the reverse. The chessboard squares are Sycamore and Rosewood veneer with inlaid ebony delimiters in a solid Mahogany frame. The box measures 20-7/8″ x 17-5/8″ open and 17-5/8″ x 10-1/2″ x 3-1/4″ closed. The square size is 2-0″. The Backgammon points are 6″ long. This antique is in excellent condition with a fine linear crack parallel to the fold. The luster is quite good but the board could use a good coat of a quality paste wax like Lebron’s or MinWax. The chess and Backgammon board/box  appears to have been produced in the mid-to- late 1800s. The chessboard is designed to accommodate chessmen with a base diameter of between 1-3/8″ and 1-1/2″ and Draughtsmen or Backgammon checkers up to 1-3/8″ in diameter.
