Reproduction English Barleycorn Chessmen.
A superb and extremely accurate modern reproduction of set of the slender English Barleycorn style Chessmen, cast and assembled in sections like the originals, but from a natural and red-colored ivorine material. The King stands 4-1/4″ tall with a broad 1-5/8″ diameter base. The chess pieces rest atop green felt base pads. They are in as new condition. These chess pieces play and display best on a chessboard with 21/4″ squares. The reproduction antique Carton-Pierre chessboard shown in the images is not included in this offering but can be purchased separately elsewhere on this website.
These designs were made by John Calvert and William Lund as well as John Jaques, among others.
A page from the 1860 Jaques Pattern Book, which was lost when their factory was destroyed during a WWII German V2 attack, shows similar sets produced by them during that period. The pattern book was discovered in the 1990s during a site excavation where the Jaques factory previously stood.
