Offered here is a charming Vintage Mexican Pintop Folk Art Chess Set, complete with its original decorative wooden storage box that functions as the chessboard.
The King stands 3-3/4 inches tall. These classic hand-crafted chessmen are constructed in the traditional Pintop style — multiple turned and carved wooden components skillfully assembled on a central pin or stem. One side is finished in a rich dark reddish-brown stain, while the opposing side is left in natural light wood tones.
Each piece displays the distinctive stylized folk-art detailing for which Mexican woodcarvers are renowned: layered, patterned bodies on the pawns and major pieces. The set is complete with all 32 pieces and the chessboard/storage box.
The accompanying wooden box is a standout feature, featuring high-quality geometric marquetry and inlaid patterns of stars, triangles, and scalloped motifs.
Manufactured in Mexico (likely in the Paracho region of Michoacán or a similar woodcarving center) during the mid-to-late 20th century.
