Vintage Soviet Carbolite Black and White Chessmen.
Shown here is a limited edition set of Vintage Soviet Carbolite Chessmen. The King measures 4-1/2″ tall with a 1-1/4″ diameter base. The corpulent chess pieces are cast from black and white Carbolite and rest atop gold gilt trimmed bases. Carbolite is a phenol formaldehyde resin analogous to Bakelite and is commonly found in items made in the former Soviet Union. This Soviet chess set is sometimes referred to as a “Siberian Souvenir Chess Set” and was likely produced in the 1980s at the Soviet Divnogorsk plant.
An original cardboard display box (not included) for this set is shown in the gallery. The words “Chess Souvenir” can be seen printed in Cyrillic on the side of the box. No chessboard is included with this sale, but a suitable chessboard can be found here. The chessmen are in excellent condition.
