Description

Vintage Trojan War Plated Cast Metal Chessmen.

This striking set of Vintage Trojan War Cast Metal Chessmen brings the legendary Trojan War to the chessboard. One side is finished in rich gold/bronze tones representing the invading Greek (Achaean) forces. The opposing army, in silver, represents the defenders of Troy. The King stands a full 4 inches tall with a 1-3/8″ diameter base, giving the set excellent presence and stability.

The pieces are highly detailed figural sculptures. Warriors appear in classical armor with crested helmets, round shields, spears, and swords. The Knights evoke the famous Trojan Horse. Classical columns stand as rooks, while ships and other mythological elements complete the narrative. Female figures and heroic male statues round out the major pieces.

The combatants in the Trojan War are represented by the following heroes and heroines.

Greek (Gold/Bronze) side

  • King: Agamemnon – High King of Mycenae and commander of the Greek coalition
  • Queen: Helen of Troy – the Spartan queen whose abduction sparked the war
  • Bishops: Odysseus (the cunning strategist of Ithaca) and Ajax the Great (the mighty warrior of Salamis)

Trojan (Silver) side

  • King: Priam – the aged King of Troy
  • Queen: Hecuba – Priam’s queen and mother of Hector and Paris
  • Bishops: Hector (Troy’s greatest champion) and Paris (the prince who took Helen)

The Knights are represented by the horses (including the Trojan Horse). The Trojan Rooks are rooks are the classical columns and the Greek Rooks are represented by boats. The pawns by the rank-and-file warriors of both armies.

A Mythological Display Piece

Each chessman is a miniature statue cast in metal and plated, designed to stand as much as a display object as a playing piece. The 4,0king rests atop 1.4, giving the set a commanding, museum‑like presence on a suitable chessboard board or display plinth.

This is more than a game — the Titan War chess set is a sculptural tribute to the timeless stories that have inspired Western art, literature, and imagination for millennia. Whether used for serious play, as a conversation-starting display on a library table or mantel, or as a unique gift for the mythology enthusiast or chess collector, this set delivers both visual impact and historical resonance.

The condition is excellent, vintage, with the natural patina expected of well-made cast metal pieces from the era. All major figures are present and well-detailed. A rare and engaging addition to any collection of figural or themed chess sets. Ideal for display alongside classical art, books on Greek mythology, or as a centerpiece for game nights with a scholarly twist. No chessboard is included with this offering, but a suitable chessboard can be found here.

Some History.

The theme is drawn from the Trojan War, the central conflict of Homer’s Iliad and the wider Epic Cycle. According to legend, the war began when Paris, prince of Troy, abducted (or eloped with) Helen, wife of the Spartan king Menelaus. Agamemnon then assembled a vast Greek armada and besieged the city of Troy for ten years.

The struggle featured many of the greatest heroes of Greek mythology: Achilles, Odysseus, Ajax, and Diomedes on the Greek side; Hector, Aeneas, and Paris on the Trojan side. After a decade of stalemate, Odysseus devised the stratagem of the wooden Trojan Horse. Greek warriors hid inside the hollow horse, which the Trojans brought within their walls as a trophy. That night the Greeks emerged, opened the gates, and sacked the city.

Although the war is legendary, archaeological evidence at Hissarlik (modern Turkey) shows that a major Bronze Age city was destroyed around 1180 BCE, lending a historical kernel to the myth. This chess set captures the drama, heroism, and tragedy of that epic confrontation in finely cast metal form.
