Offered here is a pristine set of Alaskan Folk Art Ceramic Chessmen. This is a classic Alaska Native Clay Chess Set produced by small Alaskan potters, often in the Fairbanks or Nome area using local clay mixed into the glaze for the distinctive effect on one side.
- Kings & Queens: Standing Inuit/Alaska Native figures
- Bishops: Standing polar bears.
- Knights: Sitting huskies/malamutes (Sled Dogs)
- Rooks: Igloos with small entrance detail.
- Pawns: Rounded seals.
One side is a glossy white glaze; the opposing side is the characteristic beige/tan Alaskan clay mix. The base marking “L 2001” is the potter’s mark and year. King height is exactly 5¼” tall. The set does not include the chessboard shown, but a suitable board is available elsewhere on this site. board (common with these sets but often sold separately).
This ceramic Alaskan Folk Art chess set is complete with 32 pieces in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. Very minor crazing is typical and expected on these glazed ceramic pieces.
